Celebrity stylist, host of Style Network’s “How Do I Look?” and Yoplait Light Two Week Tune Up spokesperson, Jeannie Mai provides her report from New York Fashion Week and how to gear up for this fall
Hot looks on the catwalk – what overall trends to look forward to this fall
I’ll forgive you if your first thought is “military is back… again?”. Yes, military remains a trend for Autumn / Fall 2010 but not as it did last year. Following on from Spring 2010, the women’s military trend turns away from the pomp of military inspired clothing we’ve become accustomed to, and takes its cues from 20th Century military uniforms. From army green to shearling lined boots, (slow down, Uggs), it’s now a trend that’s far more subtle but no less appealing.

Also haute is the sophisticated 70’s. By day it’s all about high waists, wide legs, soft blouses and ’70s accessories. By night, all that shimmers is gold. Flowing, draping dresses in high-shine fabrics or metallic hues are perfect for evening ’70s glamour. Be bold and don’t hold back, (have I ever??), this look is about balancing softness with boldness.
What will we see by way of prints and colors?
White’s gonna be a nice fresh, bright change—when it comes to tights! Whether you wear them vintage-style with a minidress and bold colors, or all light hues like a fairytale snow queen, there are various looks you’ll see glide off the runways.
Then there’s the camel coat, which didn’t make a strong appearance on the streets until late Winter 2010. It’s going to be THE alternative to the classic trench in 2010.
Next up was only a Hugh Hef musty, but we all may be fans this fall. Velvet is coming strong in four major styles, from the grungette girl to the classically elegant starlet, the vintage-inspired whimsical coquette to the masculine-as-feminine velvet clad Dandy. Colors are rich, and it can work for everything from pants to dresses, handbags to hats. Die!
Can I get a head-start?
Regardless of trends, every woman should have a go-to dress in their closet that they feel great in and flatters their body. You can get this any time of the year and mix in the latest trends.
Looking great is all about feeling great – for a quick tune-up, try something like the Yoplait Light Two Week Tune Up plan. You could lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks to give you that extra boost of confidence.
No matter what you’re wearing, stand tall… smile… and have fun. You’ll feel better and your confidence will shine through!
What about my hair and makeup this fall?
For fall 2011-12 women are powerful, sassy, assertive and tough and have been stomping down the catwalks at Alexander Wang, DKNY, and Marc Jacobs.
Accordingly, we’ve seen ponytails a-plenty and laissez-faire knots to demonstrate the fast-paced life that powerful women lead – this is as much time as we will spend on her hair, but we still looks sexy in the process.
When it comes to makeup, I have good news. Add 15 more minutes to your regime by putting away the tweezers! Thick, well-defined eyebrows represent the great novelty that made a strong come back for fall/winter 2010-2011. Prada, Narciso Rodriguez, and Alberta Ferretti are just a few that accentuated the eyebrows.
As for eyes, I’m all about the more vivid colors for the eye shadows such as orange or coral that graced the runways at Yves Saint Laurent or Christian Dior. Gorgeous.
