Michelle Obama graces cover page of Essence’s October 2011 issue. 47-year-old First Lady is looking elegant and lovely on mag’s cover in a sleeveless floral magenta dress.
In the annual October ‘Power Issue’, Michelle Obama is also feted as one of the world’s most influential Black women on the magazine’s ‘2011 Power List.’

Check out excerpts from Michelle Obama’s interview with mag:
On her message to young people: “My story to young people around this country and around the world is, don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Because I was there, and this is attainable. There is no magic to this. It is hard work….”
On her emotional trip to Africa: “One of the most beautiful aspects of [it] was the fact that there were three generations of us there. It was me, my two little girls [Sasha and Malia] and my mom [Marian].”
On finding balance and teaching it to her daughters: “If we don’t have the energy, we can’t pass it on. I learned it from watching my own mother (Marian Robinson) not invest in herself, for example. She’s starting to do that. But she came from the tradition of family first. She wouldn’t even go to the hairdresser on a regular basis. I want to show my girls that it is perfectly fine to invest in yourself and to start to do it early, embrace it and not feel guilty about the time we put into ourselves.”
