Born in 1964, in Toronto Ontario Dean and Dan Caten are identical twin brother fashion designers and creators of high-end fashion label Dsquared2.
They moved to New York in 1983, to study fashion at Parsons The New School for Design, but stayed for only one semester before returning to Toronto. They found a financial backer in 1986, and launched their first signature womenswear collection, DEanDAN. By 1988 they had signed on to label Ports International (currently known as Ports 1961) as creative directors to bring the company more fashion forward and upscale.
In 1991, the designer duo moved to Milan, where they worked as designers for the house of Gianni Versace, and denim brand Diesel. They debuted their men’s collection in 1994, and launched a women’s collection and a men’s underwear collection in 2003.
The brothers are known for designing clothes and staging elaborating fashion shows with “explosive energy”. Till now, they have designed men’s and women’s apparel, men’s and women’s footwear, fragrances, and cosmetics.
Their designs have been worn by Madonna, Britney Spears, Nicolas Cage, Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin, and Lenny Kravitz. In 2000-2001, they designed over 150 pieces for Madonna’s Drowned World Tour 2001 and “Don’t Tell Me” music video. One of their design was also worn by Britney Spears in her Circus tour.
