Jean Paul Gaultier went global for Paris pret-a-porter fall 2010 season, with a fast-paced collection that raced around world in 80 different designs and inspirations. Playing fashion’s answer to Phileas Fogg, Gaultier dipped into diverse variety of national cultures, ranging from Morocco, Turkey, Tibet and Peru, to minority tribes of China, such as Kirgiz and Zuang.
The invitation was first clue we were in for a global melting pot at Jean Paul Gaultier. It pictured a mixed-up map of world, with Mexico next to Togo, Morocco abutting Russia, India and Greece side by side, and so on. And runway certainly delivered what the designer clued.
Exotic Mongolian jewelery jangled, Rajasthani ankle bells jingled, and pagoda hats shimmered with beads and sequins, as a cross-cultural ”live” orchestra played background music on violins, a balalaika, African drums, a nose-flute and a Turkish trumpet. Paduang-style, silver chokers, from border regions of Myanmar and Thailand, appeared with black leather biker jackets and multi-colored gipsy skirts, over thigh-high cowboy boots.
From top to bottom everything in this collection was unique and unbelievable. Designer’s favorite model, Coco Rocha, wore an African-print turban, a peacoat with a silk chinoiserie lining to match her narrow skirt, brick red cowboy boots and neon green tights. Another model sported a babushka, a Masai necklace, a leather motorcycle jacket, checked harem pants, a Mexican-blanket skirt, yellow stockings, red tennis socks, and green platform sandals.
Truly its was all about a journey around the world, sometimes including several countries in one outfit. What caught everybody’s attention throughout the show were the Headwears and shoes. There were turbans, Cossack hats and stiletto sandals with ”Grand” Vizier turn-up toes. They were absolutely gorgeous, truly attractive and outstanding.
Subtract the gimmicky shoes and costume hats and, as usual, there was a fantastic clothing line to wear on. The expertly cut Gaultier trench showed up in many different guises: shrunken and cropped at hip, cutaway at thighs in front and trailing a long hem, or in black with a kimono-silk lining.
At one end of colorful spectrum was a louche smoking jacket, and, at the other, cozy-chic knits and casually luxe furs.
